Celebrating International Women’s Day (today and every day)

International Women’s Day is a day to recognize and honor the social, economic, cultural, and political contributions of women throughout history, in the present day, and will continue to do so in the future. It is a time to reflect on the progress that has been made toward gender equality and to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done. This year, IWD is all about #embracingequity. This isn’t just a hashtag for this year’s theme, this means recognizing and addressing the systemic barriers and discrimination that women face in all areas of life, including education, employment, healthcare, and politics. Embracing equity for women requires a commitment to creating a world where women have equal opportunities and access to resources, where their contributions are valued and celebrated, and where their voices are heard and respected. At Shopkick, by Trax, we’re celebrating International Women’s Day by showcasing our Fearless Female (as we like to call them) team members’ voices through a month packed with activities and forums where women can share their experiences and insights.

To kick this amazing day off, we thought we’d ask some of the women that are supporting Shopkick to be the best shopping engagement app, how they strive to be the best women leaders at home, at work, in their community and in their free time. See what they have to say below.

How do you empower yourself every day?

I wake up with a glass nearly full mentality and a positive outlook for the possibilities of what each new day may bring; I keep connected to amazing friends, even if only sharing a text to say hello. I can honestly say I have best friends from a very very young age and have added my friends throughout every phase of my life.  I wouldn’t be who I am without my girls!” – Pauline Echols, Senior Account Director (based in North Carolina)

“By pushing myself out of my comfort zone, having a positive attitude, and being consciously kinder to myself. I find that the more self-care I have, the more empowered I become.” – Sarah Roberts, Visual Designer (based in Texas)

“I set daily goals to accomplish and check them off my to-do list. There is something about checking even the smallest things off a list that helps make you feel like you conquered the day.” – Allison Kaminski, Regional Director (based in Illinois)

If you could have dinner with any 3 women (dead or alive), who would it be?

RBG because she spent her life standing her ground in the face of sexism and has paved the way for so many women that have come after her. Lucille Ball because I grew up watching I Love Lucy (thanks to my mom). Not only was she brilliantly funny, but she also proved you can do it all in terms of balancing a demanding career and motherhood. Mariah Carey because she is one of the greatest singers of all time, boasting the most number one hits as a solo artist, female songwriter & female producer. Also, I think she would be a very entertaining dinner guest after a glass of wine or two .” – Joanna Riggio, Sr. Sales Planning Manager (based in New York)

Michelle Obama, Rihanna, and Oprah Winfrey. Their stories of strength and navigating men-dominated fields, not only as women but as women of color, would be fascinating.” – Maria Baez, Content Creator (based in California)

Oprah – she has overcome so much in her life and heard stories from people of all walks of life. Queen Elizabeth – so much to be learned from the example she set becoming a young woman in leadership with a position that was previously held by men. Brittany Mahomes – this one is just fun! I love how real and down to earth she is. I think we’d be friends :).” – Lauren Jester, Vice President, CPG & Retail Partnerships (based in Arkansas)

Michelle Obama – she is incredible in many ways, a brilliant mind, a kind human, a great mother, a great wife, a fashion icon, and a powerhouse of a presence! Dame Joan Sutherland – my favorite voice of all time, a woman who was immensely talented but didn’t have the looks to open her doors to the theatrical world. She became world-renowned yet remained kind and always lifted other women around her. Laskarina Bouboulina – an unlikely leader during the worst times, she became a naval commander by chance and with pure grit. I am her descendant and would love to hear about her journey into commanding a fleet fighting for her country’s freedom, but also learn about our lineage.” – Helen Pastras, Lead Product Manager (based in North Carolina)

DOLLY PARTON (I would cry), Amanda Gorman and Tara Schuster” – Sarah Roberts, Visual Designer (based in Texas)

What’s some advice you’d give younger women entering the workforce?

Enjoy the journey and live in the moment when it comes to work. My younger self was always so eager to advance, to get ahead, to go in early and stay super late sometimes at the expense of a healthy work/life balance. Thankfully I have evolved from that and am enjoying a very healthy work/life balance as part of an organization that embraces #equity, bringing your whole self to work and where I strive to live in the moment!” Stella Araya, Senior Director, Partnerships (based in New Jersey)

“BE CONFIDENT! Women deserve it all too, so the most important advice I would give is to not cut yourself short, ask for what you deserve, and keep learning. Especially when just entering the workforce. I would also tell them to not be afraid to change their career paths, or to explore different ones, until they find something they actually like.” – Nancy Awad, Manager, User Analytics (based in Toronto, Canada)

“Relationships are everything. Embrace every role with the philosophy that you’ll work with those people again someday- treat people with respect, work hard and build a good reputation for yourself.” – Lauren Jester, Vice President, CPG & Retail Partnerships (based in Arkansas)

“Never be afraid to speak up or ask questions! Nobody at your job knows everything, and I promise that if you have a question about something, you aren’t the only one. Asking questions is a sign you are engaged and are trying to learn, which is always a great thing.” – Joanna Riggio, Sr. Sales Planning Manager (based in New York)

What can men do to help #embraceequity?

“I believe men can help to #embraceequity by using their actions and voice to advocate for their female counterparts, as well as showing support to the women in their lives by listening and setting good examples for future generations.” – Maria Baez, Content Creator (based in California)

“I have been so lucky to work with men throughout my career that #embraceequity, but of course, I have still had my fair share of negative experiences. What I think men can do to help is to not be afraid to speak up if they notice any inequality happening, and of course to always look inwards and reflect their own behaviour, and ask themselves if they are giving everyone the same opportunities and chances to learn, be heard and grow.” – Nancy Awad, Manager, User Analytics (based in Toronto, Canada)

“Actively listen to women’s perspectives and acknowledge their point of view and experiences.” – Allison Kaminski, Regional Director (based in Illinois)

“Several things need to happen to eventually lose the stereotypes that still impact women in myriad ways. I’d start with the common but immensely useful: think of your female coworkers as if they are your daughters or mothers. How would you want others to talk to them and think of them?
We are all humans with our flaws, and we will judge others. When judging, though, we should have the same standards for what is acceptable or annoying for everyone, regardless of gender identity or other differences.” – Helen Pastras, Lead Product Manager (based in North Carolina)

Strong female leadership is an integral part of Shopkick’s history, today and every day. As you can see in the responses above, #embracingequity is about recognizing the intersecting identities and experiences of women, including race, ethnicity, sexuality, ability, and socio-economic status, and working to address the unique challenges and barriers that these women face. We are so proud of our female leaders for who they at Shopkick, in their community, and at home. Here’s to each of you!!! Happy IWD.

5. Have a good-old-fashioned slumber party

When it comes to sleepovers, age doesn’t matter. Grab your girls and go on a weekend getaway, or have one right at home! Wine, chocolate, and movies – you can’t go wrong.

New Year, New You

With 2022 just around the corner, it’s time to start preparing for the New Year. Whether you’ve got a million New Year resolutions or just one, we have some ideas to keep your goals on track. Try some of these tips to help break down your resolution into more manageable goals that are sure to leave you feeling accomplished. Here we go:

1. What are your resolutions?

First thing you need to do?  Decide your overall New Year resolutions. Write down a list of all your goals or resolutions, stopping to visualize and determine what your end goal is. For example: reading more books in 2022.

2. Turn your resolution into a SMART goal

Once you have your end goal, it’s time to dive a bit deeper. This is where your SMART plan comes into play. SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. For example: I want to read more books in 2022. I’ll aim to read 12 books over the course of the year. I’ll achieve this goal by reading one book per month.

3. What resources do you need?

The next decision is figuring out what resources you need to make this goal happen. How much money will you set aside each month for a book, or will you borrow books from friends or the library? For example: I’ll sign up for the Book of the Month club or save some cash by buying my books through the Shopkick app.

4. Track your resolution

Now it is time to decide how to hold yourself accountable and track your progress throughout the year. For example: I’ll join a book club or find a reading partner. We recommend creating a simple tracking spreadsheet to keep up-to-date. The possibilities are endless for this one.

5. Complete your resolution

The final step is completing your resolution by December 2022. And with these tips guiding you through the year, that should be the easiest part!

Happy New Year and enjoy your resolutions! Resolutions can be tricky to keep up with and we’ve had our fair share of slip-ups or neglected ones in the past. However, if you follow these steps, you’re bound to have a great start to your year.

Plants that Will Survive in the Fall and Winter

Sure, the summer season is over, but that doesn’t mean your gardening days have to end! Many charming flowers and plants will blossom in the chillier months, allowing you to keep up with your hobby. Or, if you’re new to winter gardening, this is an excellent place to start! Here’s a list of relatively easy plants to care for in the winter.

1.  Coneflower

If cared for properly, coneflowers will bloom in the winter months after going dormant in the fall. They bloom in a wide variety of colors. You could choose to plant all monochromatic flowers or opt for a  mosaic display in your garden of various colors.

2. Catmint

This vibrantly pink mint plant thrives in the dark and dry winter months. However, Catmint needs sunlight and water for about a year before it can thrive. Be sure to place it in a sunny spot, and it should do perfectly fine on its own during the cold months.

3. Winterberry

This winter staple encapsulates the entire essence of the season! Its deep, dark red berries begin to sprout up after the plant’s leaves fall in autumn. It literally changes with the season… leaving you to observe the beauty!

4. Winter Pansies

These winter flowers are entertaining to watch because they grow slowly and become more beautiful over time. These plants need fertilizer in the cold and then they’ll last you 5-7 months! They have a slow blooming process that ends with a complete and colorful pansy. They can survive in the freezing weather – making them list-worthy.

5. Lily-of-the-Valley

This plant loves wintertime. It originated in the cool Northern Hemisphere, ranging from Asia to Europe. Lily-of-the-Valley is a delicate and pretty winter garden staple! This plant thrives best when kept in partial sun to full shade, so you don’t have to worry about brightness at all.

Were you thinking about starting a winter garden? It can be so gratifying and a fun way to embrace wintertime. Just be sure to provide the correct care, which shouldn’t take too much effort. Most winter plants are excellent for the long run, so that means you will be investing in something beautiful. Happy gardening!

Lavender Lemonade For Headaches

Headaches are inevitable. A constantly on-the-go lifestyle and strenuous activity can ultimately lead to these pesky pains, not to mention that most of us are sleep-deprived. Tried Tylenol? Your pain relief may have been short-lived.

Meet a surprising ancient healing mechanism: lavender. Lavender is an influential aromatherapy scent, scientifically proven to aid in depression and anxiety. So, who says sipping on a refreshing lemonade with this power plant in it can’t help your mind-bending migraine? Lavender is perfect for relieving dehydration and stress – two significant factors of headaches. This recipe is simple to make, and you can purchase all the ingredients at your local grocery store. Let’s jump into it.

Ingredients:

  1. Water
  2. Turbinado sugar
  3. Mint leaves
  4. Dried culinary lavender flowers
  5. Honey
  6. Lemon

Recipe:

Step 1: Add two cups of water to a small pot set to medium heat.

Step 2: Add ⅛ a cup of turbinado sugar and let it dissolve. Water should begin to boil.

Step 3. Add two mint leaves, ⅔ teaspoons of dried culinary lavender flower, and two teaspoons of honey to the water.

Step 4: Let ingredients steep at a simmer for about 15 minutes.

Step 5: Juice two lemons and strain the juice from the seeds and pulp.  Then, add the lemon juice to two cups of water.

Step 6: Strain the lavender mixture from the pot into the water with the lemon juice.

Step 7: Add as much ice as you want, and garnish with lemons and mint.

Step 8: Enjoy!

Top 5 Working From Home Essentials

One thing I think many of us can agree on is that working from home can be amazing. There is no commute time to worry about, what outfit you’re going to wear, packing a lunch, etc. Some might even feel more productive in their home setting rather than in an office. However, that doesn’t mean working from home is easy. It’s something that requires a bit of adjusting, and we’re here to help. Here are our top 5 working from home essentials:

1. A designated office area

Now, this may seem like a no-brainer. However,  you’d be surprised how many people work from their bedrooms. For me, this immediately was not an option. I knew that working 8 hours a day in the same  room I use to unwind, relax, and sleep  would affect my mood and work productivity. Creating a designated workspace outside of your bedroom is so important. Even if it’s just in your living room, your kitchen, or an awkward nook that you’re not quite sure what to do with (That’s where my office is, in case you were wondering) – try turning it into your productive space.

2. A happy light

Working from home can be great, but often we forget to get outside during the day. Or when you do leave the house, it’s at an inconvenient hour — you might go workout in the morning before the sun is fully risen or grab drinks with friends after sunset. Here’s where a happy light comes into play. Here are a few reasons to invest in one: 1) it brings natural light indoors, 2) energizes you, and 3) helps make healthy habits (learn more here.) We recommend one of these two Happy Lights: this option from Amazon, or get kicks for your purchase and get one from QVC

3. A daily planner

We begin our workday by scheduling out our daily activities. We write out our entire schedule and include any meetings we may have. Then we write out our to-do list and today’s top three priorities. Planning helps us feel like we have a goal each workday and helps us organize different projects and home-life priorities. We recommend this daily planner from Amazon that is only $10!

4. Coffee

This one…is probably the most important essential. If we aim to get through the workday without any caffeine, we are a zombie by 2 PM. Which is not great for anyone who has a meeting with us past 2 PM (apologies to our coworkers in advance). Whether you are making coffee at home, going on a daily walk to grab that special pick-me-up, or getting it delivered, it is essential. Plus, you don’t need to drink coffee to stay energized if you don’t like it. You could try substituting it for tea (we recommend matcha) or other healthy energy drinks like Kombucha. Either way, drink up!

5. A hobby outside of work

Working from home means it is easier to take short breaks to enjoy something not related to your everyday work projects. Just don’t neglect those work projects as well. For us, we like to read.  If there are days when we know the majority of our workday will be staring at a screen or in meetings, we value scheduling 15-minute breaks every few hours to read part of a current book. For you, maybe it’s drawing, light sketching, or listening to a podcast episode. But it is so important to stimulate your mind in other ways and switch up your location or activity to avoid end-of-day burnout.

Those are just a few essentials for your workday. These don’t necessarily have to be designated for working from home either and can be easily incorporated into working in an office life. I hope you found some of these tips useful and have a great week at work.

Daily Health Hacks

If you open up any media platform, you’ll likely be told that intermittent fasting, a workout regimen, massive caloric deficits, or a complete home gym will lead you to a healthier lifestyle. We’re excited to tell you that your self-care journey does not need to be so consuming (or expensive!) Small changes can have much larger benefits, overtime. Here are some simple steps to incorporate into your daily routine that will lead you to a happier and healthier version of yourself.

HYDRATE

Many of us are used to starting our days with coffee; however, it is time for a change. Drink water first! Then you can make your way to the coffee pot. We’re all aiming to drink more water, so find ways to make it more fun by buying yourself a cute water bottle or tumbler. If you’re someone who wants to drink more water, but simply forgets, we encourage you to download an app like Hydrocoach that will send you reminders to drink up.

BE A MORNING PERSON… SOMETIMES

The early bird gets the worm! Having a morning routine is amazing. If you can, go on a walk or drink your coffee outside (after your water, of course)! Not only is exercising in the morning good for your metabolism, it will also give you a few moments of peace to start your day.

DOODLE

Take a moment to pour your imagination into a sketch. No pressure, just draw! Drawing can be very calming. In fact, many studies show that art as a therapy form helps with  depression and anxiety. If you aren’t particularly creative, go buy yourself a coloring book so you don’t miss out on the fun. Coloring isn’t just for kids, we promise!

STRETCH

Stretching is very underrated, especially since so many of us struggle to squeeze in ways to be active throughout the day. Set some stretching reminders to reset your wrists and neck throughout your work day. Plus, stretching before bed may even help you get better sleep. Give it a try!

EAT A HEALTHY MEAL

Eating healthier while saving money? We promise this isn’t too good to be true. Eating healthy is a great way to boost your wellbeing, and it can be so easy with modern meal-kit providers like HelloFresh that will plan your meals for you and send you the perfect amount of ingredients!

SIT ON YOUR FLOOR

Next time you take a break to watch your favorite show, sit on the floor. It will realign your body after being bent over your screen all day. Kneel, squat, or sit with your legs stretched out.

UNPLUG

Time goes by crazy fast when you’re scrolling through Facebook and Instagram. It’s important to be able to step away from scrolling when you need to. Put your phone down and pick up a book, play a game, or just sit outside and nature watch!

TREAT YOURSELF

Don’t forget to prioritize YOU. Buy the skirt you’ve been eyeing for the past month, eat the cupcake, try the yoga class, take some time to rest – you deserve it!

Sometimes, it can be difficult to separate what you think you need from what you actually need. When it comes to mental and physical health, there are so many suggestions for how you should be spending your time and money. Wellness means something different for everyone. Just do your thing! And take care of yourself, please.
